I loved my Rollei in the fifties and sixties, Walter, but both my D3 and my D800 blow it out of the water.

I couldn't wait to get the ordered 500C with its 2.8/80mm, and its first professional gig was an outdoor one at Balmaha, Loch Lomond. On processing the TXP I got the fright of my life: shake. I hadn't factored in vibrations which, with the old Rollei, didn't exist at any goddam speed, so was never a factor to bear in mind!

Rollei TLRs did Helmut Newton no harm, ditto Avedon and the younger Bailey! Probably gave me my best kick up the ladder too.

But, knowing their foibles and the ways around, I'd have the 500 series today, and if with one lens only, the 180mm.

I do not believe for a moment.

Always be something about that Planar & Biogon formula ...my Canon 60D never comes close.

And part of the Rollei charm is the square format - simply so damned useful.

My Rollei was a second-hand cheap one: T-model with 3.5/75mm Tessar. It was quite nice for skin - slightly plastic in nature (not plastic as in digital appearances), where the 'blad's 80mm Planar was as sharp as a new needle.

I have often wished, looking back, that I'd simply kept everything and traded nothing away for tiny, short-term gain.

I shot square most of my professional career ..  Bronica /TLR /Rollei SL/Hassy >>  a very sharp 6X7 = the MAKINA with a Nikkor 2.8

I have a suspicion that I saw it linked to Newton at one time, or somebody else pretty famous, who thought of it as a splendid travel camera,  better than most alternatives of the day.

I got the idea from Brett Weston -- he used the 67W on infinity >  and shot B&W clouds -- with filters ~!

Only by pixel peeping! Nowhere near the rendering...

It must be the lens on those film cameras -- and years of perfection of calibrating the elements to film plane.  Wish my 17-50 Canon 2.8 had that ability = coupled to a 60D.  Lots of problems with focus > and just simple manual sharpness .. One has to do so much post work to make it acceptable.javascript:void(0);

Yep, and the model A Ford was a great car. Hasn't been beaten yet. Not to mention the crank telephone.

Love the new technology -- as long as it can compete with its past :-)

Haven't got a bloody clue about 'TLR Rollei' but that's a really great image Cjogo. ( and I've really gotten to like my 60D over the last 3 years ).

Thanks  -- just a elderly river man -- lived in a shanty along the Ohio ..  did a few of him.  The TLR was a nice camera for "shooting over the crowds" ...you could hold it straight above and compose on the ground glass.
