Beautiful profile for D800 (included)
« on: February 27, 2014, 10:56:59 am »

I have been working a lot with color (and tone) rendition in various RAW converters and I have always been a bit frustrated the LR's rendition.

Since LR is my converter of choice, I have been working on a new calibration technique to create a new profile for the D800 I'd like to share with you.

Intends:
  • Create a standard profile pleasing for most of the photos without any adjustment, one that can create the wow effect without messing with every slider (supposing you have something good at the begining!)
  • Not to create a neutral profile
  • Sublte colors, wild when needed (I have always found that Camera raw is too dull or too saturated with no subtlelty)
  • Filmic tone curve with gentle highlights rolloff and enough contrast as a standard profile
  • Get closer to what some people call the CCD rendition
  • Get a profile that make me use it all the time and forget about the Camera Calibration panel

What I got at the moment:
  • A pretty good tone curve, contrasty enough not to fiddle with the tone for every image, and which can take contrast adjustments without getting too bright or blocked in the shadows
  • Subtle colors, yeah! With good skin tones. Saturated colors stay saturated.
  • No more slight magenta cast of Adobe Standard or green cast of Camera Standard
  • For now, a quite neutral color rendition without creative shifts
  • This a a daylight profile not yet tested for incandescant light

You may download the preliminary profile here: RTH Standard v4 beta

Please let me know what you think about it!

Romain, I'm interested in giving your profile a look, could you easily make a similar one for the 800E?

May I ask how you went about creating this profile?  What target / software did you employ?
Thanks.

Hello Romain,

Thanks for going to all the trouble to make this profile.

I downloaded your preliminary profile and as I am not computer savvy I don’t know how to install it.

Would it be possible to post screen grabs of the settings your have in your camera raw for me to copy.

Regards

Simon
You have just to copy the dcp profile into one of the following folders:

Windows—C: \ Users \ [your username] \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ CameraRaw \ CameraProfiles \
Mac—Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Library / Application Support / Adobe / CameraRaw / CameraProfiles /

And for testing purposes, the D800E equivalent : link

Note that this one is not fully calibrated from a D800E. It is the D800 made enabled for the D800E.

Hello Chron,
Thank you for sharing!
i just tested it quickly on two D800e images and i think i still prefer the camera standard version better. Yours seems to have much more contrast for one.
Maybe it is a d800e problem...

Hi !
Not a D800e problem.
My profile has a mid-contrasty look.
Camera standard is more contrasty in the very dark part but flatter in the mid tones.
Mine is more distributed with slightly less luminance in the mid tones.
In fact it is very similar to the Capture One tone curve with slightly less contrast in the shadows.
Appreciated your opinion.

I've been changing the profile following your comments and some comments from other forums.

This is beta 2 which the following changes:

Vastly improved color separation
Improved blues and reds
Improved foliage colors
Slightly less contrasty tone curve in the shadows
Remember this is not intended to be a neutral / flat profile.
