Paper advice for new Z3200PS
« on: February 17, 2014, 11:19:34 pm »

We're finally retiring our B9180 finally as it has nearly collapsed. I'm planning on pulling the trigger on a new Z3200PS to replace it. For a variety of reasons the 44'' capability will fit our needs much better.

We've always used HP Advanced Photo Paper in our B9180 and been satisfied with it. Note that we don't print anything for sale, it's for use as part of a creative process.

We'd like to start with a paper for the 3200 which would be as close as possible to the APP to minimize the changes we'll be going through. Perhaps later on we could try other papers.

For now I'd like to start with 44" rolls although some 24" (?) rolls might also be useful if obtainable of the same paper.

If any of you have recommendations we'd love to hear them.

Thanks

I have a HP B9180 here and also a Z3100.

Because of the gloss enhancer- you will find it is better with glossy papers.

Both printers are very constant in their output. The HP z3200 has a better gamut and because of the gloss enhancer - prints on glossy paper are not prone to gloss differences and bronzing. indeed the best glossy paper for the HP9180 is HP Advanced Photo Paper.
I would say take one test image - print it on the HPB9180 and keep it a s a reference.
Then print it with a z3200 on a glossy HP paper with the right profile and you will notice it is about the same. Make sure you do everything right with colormanagement etc. write down how you printed it.
I am a photographer and for checking my work is send out( not for presentation), i use HP everyday pigment glossy paper.
I has a wide gamut and looks good for its purpose, and its cheap. The z3200 is much cheaper on ink because of the larger cartridges.

I see that the HP Z5200 appears to use the same inks as the B9180 that we're retiring. It's also newer than the Z3200.

HP makes me nervous about buying the 12 ink Z3200 that they seem to be ignoring while they have come out with several new 8 ink printers.

Has anyone done any evaluation of the Z5200 for photo printing? It also has a built in spectrophotometer for profiling.

Thanks

Hi Jim,

I was interested in the z5200 as well.

Here's an interesting post on the subject:

Basically, the z5200 is more of a commercial machine and not the "big brother" to the z3200. 8 inks as opposed to 12 inks with the 3200.

Good luck. Hope this helps.
