i1Profiler V2 and V4 Profile Building Percularity
« on: February 11, 2014, 07:05:27 am »

I recently discovered a weird behaviour with RGB printer profiles built using i1Profiler. I am currently using the latest version, 1.5.0, and I have seen the same issue with earlier versions too.

The perceptual table for version 2 profiles are slightly lighter than the same table for version 4 profiles. In other words, the perceptual rendering intent is slightly darker (in certain regions, mostly in the mid tones) for V4 profiles than V2.

The relative colorimetric tables are identical regardless of profile version.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Not sure if this is a bug or if it is due to the way the perceptual tables are calculated in v4 profiles. I gather that a Perceptual Reference Medium Gamut is specified for version 4 profile calculation. Perhaps it has something to do with this?

Haven't noticed because I never make V4 profiles, that's just asking for trouble. I'll check it out today but the bottom line is, V4 profiles don't provide anything at all useful and often cause problems with various applications. And no, i1P does NOT support PRMG. That's why their V4 profiles and most other's are just V2 profiles in sheep's clothing.

They also do not support PRMG.

If the consensus is, is that v4 profiles are to be avoided unless you have a good reason to do so, why does X-Rite software default to v4 profiles? Too many users assume that the default settings are the best ones to use, and especially with i1Profiler, that couldn't be further from the truth. And while we're at it, how come the jump from version two to version four? I've never seen nor heard of a version three profile.

They don't support PRMG! They are not true V4 profiles. Ignore them. Why does X-rite default to that setting? You'd have to ask them, along with a lot of other questions about the strangeness of their software design.
