Phase One IQ250 Initial Tech Camera Test Results
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:51:25 am »

Hey everyone!

I have been a long time reader and now first time poster. First, a little background on me so we can get to know each other: I have spent the last 10 years working in the photo industry in varying support roles as photo assistant, digital technician, Digital Capture Manager for a large fashion studio as well as for a boutique capture outfit and also done some digital consulting for start up e-commerce studios. I spent the lion share of those 10 years in NYC but recently had an opportunity to join the wonderful team at Capture Integration and jumped at the chance. I have now relocated to Atlanta to continue to provide top notch support for those in our industry by heading up the Tech Support and Rental teams.

One of the more exciting things about this new role is getting the IQ250 in our hands first. We had some time to play with it yesterday and have this post to share right now about our initial findings with the IQ250 and tech cameras. Click the link and take a look at what we have found so far:

Capture Integration Exclusive: IQ250 on Tech Cameras

Stay tuned, as we have much more to come!

Thanks for the info. This will start another interesting series of responses.

However even with the 40mm you can easily see the issues of the cropped sensor at only 10mm of shfit/rise etc.  Take it to 15mm or even 20mm and I don't think it will do very good.  Past 18mm of shift you hit the disc on the 40mm but it should be nice to see 15m of just pure shift.  You are pushing the LCC on the 250 with just 10mm of shift/rise on the 250 as can be clearly seen on the LCC image you provided.   With this much light loss, it would be also interesting to see about color/sat loss and attempted recovery in Capture One.

Schneider as expected.

Thanks for posting. The 40 looks usable, right?

I hope you can test the 28 and 23 too.

I would expect the 23 and 28 to do fine within their limited range of about 5 to 7mm of max shift  due to the smaller 70mm image circle.  Actually now that I think about it they may do better than the Full size sensor as you won't vignette anywhere near as bad at 7mm due to the cropped sensor, may get to 10mm to 12mm. before it kicks in.

It will certainly start more interesting responses ;)

We're currently running through a lot more tests and finishing up some posts about other features we want to show off. I hope within the next day to have much more content showing real word scenes exhibiting shift on a few popular lenses.

Any plans to test the Canon TSE's using the FPS?

Kind regards,

Anthony, take a look at the reference to the size of the photosites on the P30, P30+ sensor in the linked page at C.I.  It should be 6.8 instead of 9. And good luck and have fun in your new job! --Barbara

Thanks for posting! The results are pretty much what I expected given what has been said before. The 60MP backs seem to still be the best for tech camera use still. The IQ250 is a DSLR killer though.

Thanks for catching that Barbara - you're right, 9.0 takes us back to the days of the 16mp and 22mp CCD sensors.

Hey Barbara,

As Steve mentioned, thanks for the catch on that. Was a long night in the office and it seems Zac and I must have both missed that typo. Appreciate it.

The IQ250 is a DSLR killer though.

Hum... it is better yes. Now, the gap with the D800/a7r is similar to my eyes to the one I would expect between DSLRs generations. It is basically roughly one generation ahead of the D800/a7r.

Taking into account the top notch lenses relseased recently on 35mm, I think that the real world gap between a Phasone glass+IQ250 and next generation DSLR+Otus like glass would be hard to detect in real world applications.

The question is whether waiting a few months/one year is worth 35,000 US$ or not? My view is that it is not for anyone for whom 35,000 US$ is a significant amount of money.

If stitching is considered in the picture, then the IQ250 already has close to zero advantage today. IMHO.

Cheers,
Bernard
