Pattern, Interrupted
« on: January 27, 2014, 09:44:42 pm »

Hi There:  One of the people in our photography group is starting a series of assignments where people shoot on a theme and then critique each other's work.  The first theme is 'pattern, interrupted' - not so much about seeing patterns but looking for breaks in the pattern.  Since many of the people participating are new to photography posted this one to give them something to consider:

I posted this image for several reasons. It's a quick cell phone shot from the Royal BC Museum, pushed around a bit in Lightroom. It's not a very good image, but it illustrates a few points. For one, photography is a visual medium, and so any photograph you have to explain isn't doing its job properly. At the same time, it's common for beginning photographers especially to become attached to images because of the story that accompanies them. They have a memory, a history that accompanies the image - but no one else who sees it will know that. Having said that, I posted this image because the patterns in the image are obvious - both the columns and the red brick patterns in the floor, but the interruption is more subtle. It's the light. The entire image is in shadow except for the sunlight cutting across the bottom of the frame and climbing up the post. I cropped the image to a 5x7 format to keep as much of the pattern as possible but to cut the light right to the bottom right corner. It's as if the sunlight is trying to creep into the shot, unobtrusively, but the columns are forming a protective fence around 'their' space. Whither have you come but no further! Anyway, that's one view.

Mike.
