9890 Print scrape
« on: January 23, 2014, 05:41:09 pm »

Hello. I have a 9890 that I don't use a lot but when I do I love it. Until today. Trying to print on Ilford Gold silk 44" and every print has a scrape on the top left of the image. Is there a way to fix this. Don't notice it on matte. Is the paper too curled?
Thanks

I don't know that paper is it a glossy?  These printers can be hard on pure glossy paper in the larger sizes, giving a scratch or two.

Things to consider, Platen gap, wider, or widest may help.  What is the weight of the paper?  I can't get any 300W pure glossy to print from my 9900 with a scratch or two, very evident on prints with a lot of black.  Where as if I back off to Moab Lasal 270W, I can most times get a large print out with no scratch, with platen gap at wider.  If I go to widest I tend to see banding in the darkest blacks.

Thanks, will give it a try
Gold silk is a baryta 310 weight.
Is it from the paper curling or is it just paper thickness?

What's weird is on a 44x44"  print it scrapes in one area about a 1/2 inch square. No where else. Sadly it's a lighter area and the scratch has some darker ink on it so really obvious

One more thought, is the light area throughout the entire width of the print?  If not you could flip it in the printing software so the area that scratches is on the other side.  The 310 w plus curl may be most of the problem.

Will try the flip
As well, may cut a piece into sheet size and leave it out for a day to flatten then print. Will report back

Paul,
Thanks for your help. Flipped the print 180 degrees and widen the platen one setting and a perfect print. Thanks for your help

Sounds like you are running roll paper. My workaround besides for some prints rotated at 180 degrees is to add a couple of inches to the leading edge of the print--e.g., run your 44x44 on a page that's 46x44 with the top blank. Sometimes that will also fix the problem.

You'll burn more paper, but have more useable prints in my experience.

Larry,
Thanks for the tip. Weird though as this print had a 6" white border all the way around?
