Landscape Arch, Arches, NP
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:26:01 am »

this one was a tough one because i timed it all wrong and by the time i got there the sun had already set behind the arch making for some very bad light.  this is def a sunrise arch.  oh well, i'll get it better next time.

Chris, it's a place worth seeing and shooting at all times of day, in all kinds of light.  Have you heard the story about this arch's name?  When the initial surveys were being done, this one was to be called Delicate Arch, probably because of how long and slender the span was.  Another arch that looked like a croquet wicket was to be called Landscape Arch.  The printer got the labels reversed and the Park Service had little recourse after all the printing had been done, but to leave it that (wrong) way.  "What's in a name?"  Indeed.  LJ

It's a very photo of Landscape Arch. I like the snow and the red rocks. The only minor thing that could be improved (without reshooting) is the sky, it looks like you used something like negative clarity (especially around the arch). But it might also be my ageing laptop, uncalibrated, monitor.

Anyway, I like it a lot.

Simple composition but I like it.  Yes, this location does typically work better at sunrise and early morning but if you're there at the right time of year, it's also interesting to photograph just before sunset with a sunburst appearing behind the arch.

It may not have the cliché, exciting light....but your treatment does present a realistic version of what it looks like.  Tried it in B+W?

Here's another take on the arch. Midday in late October, and I wish I had caught a pair of ravens flying in front of the arch to give a sense of scale, but I was not quick enough. I love seeing these different views of the same subject!

My shot was so bad that I'm disguising it with a heavy preset, but here's a view from behind:

Just found this dawn shot. I remember now the sun came out just long enough to swing the camera up to get the extreme saturation in front of me:
