Looks remarkably like multishot noisereduction. At least on the Sony it will sound 4 shutterrelease clips, but in reality it takes a lot more images in rapid succesion and uses the time of 4 shutterrelease sounds to process into a single image.
If you move the camera quickly enough, this is what it looks like. But yours was a Canon, no?

Yes, it was a Canon, a pocket S110 which I often carry with me for quick snapshots. A couple of weeks ago I decided to turn on automatic exposure bracketing.
Of course, now whenever I use that camera, I forget that it is going to take three photos, and right after I press the shutter button, I swing it down to stick it in my pocket. Then when I download the images to my PC, I typically have one clean shot followed by two blurry accidents, which I then delete.
This one I thought looked like a mildly interesting abstract.
Note to self: Stick a label on top of the camera reminding me to wait for all three shots...
