Out on a hike on a nice day recently I pulled out my pocket camera for some snaps at a small pond.

2 very enjoyable series Eric.  :)

Here is something from last weekend after an overnight fog.  Unfortunately it lost some sharpness on the jpeg compression.

Chuck, it looks fairly sharp to me. This is an excellent water droplet image. The larger droplets, which of course gives the image the overall structure, remind me of hot air balloons.

While waiting for the flowers to come out, I decided to process some autumn images and really like this one. Used a high pass technique that I just learned last night to give the image a blend of sharpness and blur.

Chuck:  Wonderful shot! To me it looks like an army of zillions of ladybugs, of different sizes, on the march.

John R: I love both of your new ones.

John I really like this one too, and one love to see it larger. Also, any chance you could share the sharpness/blur blend technique?

Eric and John - Wow - lady bugs and hot and balloons and here I was caught up in trying to figure out the whys of the size distribution.  Got to loosen up a bit .  :)

You can't see it in the low resolution images but some of the full resolutions shots in the group from which this shot came show small domains of of oriented droplets which remind me of a lot of oriented lamellae in crystals.  :P

A lot of really enjoyable shots in this thread from a number of different contributors.  Keep them coming.

Hi Arlen. I am not really that good with PS. I usually do basic stuff. As you probably know, excessive blur can also ruin an image and be very disconcerting for viewers, if not done just right. I almost always sharpen my ICM images. Then I learned to simply select areas within an image to sharpen, leaving the remainder soft and blurry. I got the more global technique from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOeZD8ZKCjQ

Scroll to the 3/4 mark and look for High Pass techniques.

From what I gather, it will sharpen around edges of elements leaving the remainder almost untouched. You can use the opacity tool to reduce sharpening. If I find it unsuitable for my other images, ie, sharpening where I don't want it, I will go back to selecting areas and then apply this high pass technique to the selected areas. It looks especially useful for soft, almost flat light images. Thank you for the feedback. Here is a larger image:

I've settled on high-pass filtering for ICM shots as well but the real trick that John has mastered so well is the amount of movement and contrast control.

Thanks for showing this one bigger, John. It's one of your very best, IMHO (and you have very many winners).

I plan to study the high-pass part of the video, and, with luck, I may have something worth showing in about another five years.

Indeed, it's absolutely wonderful. I would even dare say the word masterpiece. If it were mine, I would surely print it large.

And thanks for the description of the finishing technique and the link; I'll check it out as soon as I have a chance.

Thank you Chuck. As a matter of fact, the author of this technique mentions that high-pass is inherently contrasty. So he creates two layers, and reduces the contrast to zero in the top layer, as far as it will go. Then after applying sharpness to said layer, he will choose a blend mode for the two layers. He explains each blend mode in turn. I used the overlay and that was good to go. But you can use the others and then alter the opacity if you find it too much. Of course if not enough, you can go back and increase the sharpness.

Not in the same league IMO as the previous contribution, but I rather liked this recent capture, so I'll throw it into the pot.

It looks superb to me, Arlen. It draws you in right away. Love the colour contrast between the violet-blue background and the orange-red net. The irregular shape of the blue area positioned as a diagonal in the picture space gives an otherwise calm image a dynamic quality. And the small lines of red are wonderful accents that make you rest and explore the blue space, before continuing on. You can even see this as one lattice work juxtaposed against another- the small net lattice vs the large blue window lattice. First rate abstract IMO!

Thanks guys, your feedback is much appreciated.

John, yesterday I spent a couple of hours experimenting for the first time with Intentional Camera Movement. I see that getting the images to come out how you want is very challenging, to say the least. It gives me even more appreciation for the stellar results you have presented in this thread.

I'll stick with cords and strings for one more image.
