More experimentation...

I like it very much but for the stars; for me, they introduce something that doesn't fit with the rest of the feeling. Just too defined and distracting.

Very fine! And different from your usual broad landscapes.

It's a Bryce Marden...I like this picture very much, Eric.

That's cool Peter; did Bryce invent/discover string theory?

I learn something amazing and new every day. The downside: there's no place left to store it without dumping previous files. That, of course, is the basis of dementia: too much friggin' information and not enough space on the C disk.

There is no solution, I'm afraid.

:-(

Very intriguing, Bob. I admire your experimenting spirit.
Like it very much, except the stars. But hey, it's for a big day.

Like this one, Eric. But I am curious as to why the street is so bright. Using Flash or under lamp light?

It was shot in fairly flat light and I boosted the contrast and added some vignetting to liven it up. I now realize that it does look as if there was an unnatural light source. But it was all Lightroom trickery, no PhotoShopping required.

These are not necessarily great images but I want to show them because I tried one of the in-camera "filters" called "Bold Monochrome." Based on some trials, I think it does not reproduce bw well on subjects that are already highly contrasty. Such as white sidewalks and black elements on sunny days. It completely overwhelmed the whites and blacks. I am going to try this filter on moderately sunny days, hopefully with just soft shadows, and see how the monochromes reproduce.

Just want to expand on what I said about the "Bold Monochrome" experiments. Notice how where darks and blacks already exist things quite quickly turn blacker. Whites almost pure. For some subjects, this will work. But for most, the extremes look unreal and unusable for reasonably natural images. See below.

The Sony's have a high-contrast mono mode, which i presume is an equivalent. The whites show haloing which seems a deliberate effect, and for the little Sony's the blacks tend to block, though that can help to separate subject of course. I think it renders that way so you can emulate the covetted gritty street look.

I have yet to try it on the A7 which has significantly more DR. See what they are really after.

Blue Vase from Covent Garden

The backstory:

Me: "Where did you get that?"
Wife: "Covent Garden."
Me: "What?  We haven't visited London in years!"
Wife: "And now you finally notice it."

Please do try it. I would like to see some results. For my part, I still want try this mode on bright overcast days to see if the bw is less contrasty and whether blacks and white block up less.

An IR look that to my eye looks less murky than a straight bw average conversion. It certainly allows the textures to come out.
