Simple image program needed
« on: January 18, 2014, 05:17:27 pm »

My wife loves using her Nikon point-and-shoot to take pictures of all sorts of things, always JPEG files, and likes to post them online, send to friends, and the like. She's not interested in big prints or any of the IQ things we LULA people spend so much time on. She'd like a fairly simple program (for Windows) that just does the basics such as:

- Change exposure and contrast
- Crop
- Change size
- Adjust color balance
- Remove red eye

Any suggestions? Free would be nice!

Have you considered Nikons own free application Nikon View NX2?

It can handle JPEG as well as raw and I think fulfill most of your requirements.  Not sure I could classify it as simple - still perhaps worth a look?

Picassa from Google may work for you. It automatically searches the PC for images and builds a catalog of some sort. It is free.

Have you tried the Windows Live Photo Gallery?  It seems to have everything you're looking for.

Wife and daughter used Google Picasa for a while, worked pretty well. Simple, lots of features but easy to figure out.

Windows Live Photo Gallery is surprisingly good. It's free and it's probably already on your machine.

I recently ran across an image editor which is FREE and has all the features most people would want.  It is PAINT.NET and can be downloaded at:

http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

It runs fast on my old XP machine, and I would say it is easier to use than any version of Elements I have tried over the years.
