Reflections in White and Black
« on: January 18, 2014, 02:04:30 pm »

I've been trying for a few years to get a certain combination of themes to work together in a minimalistic B&W nature photo. This one is the latest in a series of attempts.

A lovely image, but I think the large expanse of increasing brightness over the egret holds little interest and detracts from the darker, more subtle shadings of the subject. I'd crop about half of it, which would remove the brightest portion and give a more interesting off-center composition.

Very nice! Have you cropped it? I would like to see what it would look like in a landscape orientation.

A wonderful image that works very well in monochrome!

Hi all, I am on my way to the mountains, so won't get to it right away, but I have cropping aspirations for this one now that you mention it, and will send an update when possible. Thanks for the comments!

"Elegant" is an excellent descriptor. Have you considered a square crop with the egret off-centre (upper or lower left)?

I totally agree with terry and also think a square crop would really emphasise the many qualities of this image.

Hi all,
You convinced me that a square crop was worth a try. Here's an updated version. Let me know what you think.
Thanks!

Out of curiosity, I went back and pulled out a few previous images to see how my vision of this scene developed. From start to finish, you can see the progression here in 5 photos.

To me it appears so, that cropping a bit from the top was a good idea.
But I find the bird needs more room above to "breathe".
I'd not let limit myself by an idea of "square" - just do it more "squarish", but not that much as a square crop would do.
Maybe something in the the direction of a 4x5 or 6x7 ratio.
Cheers
