I like the colours and composition, John. Did you try a range of exposure times?

I find these kinds of images get a relatively limited response here on Lula, dunno why. I like them.

At some point try something similar but without the rock. A longer exposure would add.

The rock provides a great temporal contrast to the moving water - keep it! Typically a shot like this is done with a slower shutter speed to smooth out the water. Here the water appears rather frenetic; not a bad thing, just different from the norm (which is what art is all about). For better or worse, it will come across as "should have used a longer exposure" to many.

I think the rock makes the photograph, but its placement is awkward.  And yes it really did look like that!  I love the color.

Thanks for looking :)

Exposure times/water movement: I took exposures using several shutter times, but all trying to hone in on what you see here.  I wanted just enough movement for the water to provide some contrast to the rock while maintaining it's inherent texture.

Focus:  This was taken with tilt applied.

Placement of the rock: The placement was intentional.  For me there is a lot of interplay in the image between dark and light, orange and blue, movement and stillness.  In this respect the placement of the rock works with the shadow in the lower right.  I know that the placement can be challenging if you're not used to seeing a focal object there.  I'm used to looking at things reversed on ground glass so it's less foreign to me.  I'm considering hanging this as a vertical with the rock in the lower right for this reason.

sdwilsonsct: Nice set.  I especially enjoyed "birch, water, rock".

Yes, the whole thing looks pretty carefully thought-out to me.

Glad you liked the river set.

I guess I'm one of the weird ones on LuLa, because I like it just the way it is, and I don't think any of the suggestions other posters made would improve the image at all.

Just my curmudgeonly two farthings.
