Waterfalls along the Columbia River
« on: January 16, 2014, 07:57:20 pm »

I would like to head for Portland in early June and visit several of the waterfalls along the Columbia River. Where is a good and convenient place to stay? Bringing the wife and need to keep her happy. Cost is not a major issue. Thank you.

I would look at Mcmenamins in Troutdale.  I don't want to spoil it for you, but this place has got character!  From here it is only about 10 minutes to the Gorge.

Whenever I'm in the Portland area, I always stay at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver Washington. The lodge is designed in an alpine fashion, very warm and welcoming. Rooms are large with great balconies. The lodge has a great restaurant and lounge with huge fireplace and piano. Very nice. It take me 1/2 hour to be at the waterfalls from the lodge. There is a mall just 5 minutes walk from the lodge that might keep your wife entertained if she does not want to tag along with you.

Those recommendations are fine....however, downtown Portland is a wonderful urban area.  Well worth exploring.  It is my favorite city on the west coast.

That said....June is rather late for waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge.  Quite frankly, I would wait for a major storm to hit Portland and then show up just after the storm.  There are lots of minor falls that only run after major storms that are more interesting than the known waterfalls.

You might want to check with the Forest Service which manages the Columbia Gorge for additional information.

The idea is great to stay in the city, but there is a Holiday Inn Express in Troutdale, close to the Gorge.
