Minas Morgul
« on: January 04, 2014, 03:55:42 pm »

"...the light of it now, wavering and blowing like a noisome exhalation of decay, a corpse-light, a light that illuminated nothing." J R R Tolkein

This pretty much sums up my feelings about light pollution. But last night it was quite pretty in the blowing ice crystals.

Wasn't sure how much to straighten the image, and left the longest column leaning in a bit.

Fun shot and nicely done.  Sounds like it is cold in Sask.

Thanks, guys. Cold, yes: -34, -50 with the windchill. Amazing how the dSLR an be used while wearing big thick gloves.

No problem with the leaning for me... if anything, indicates perspective. However, it seems that the column suffers from a barrel distortion, and that does bother me a bit.

Otherwise, a rather original capture. With the recent advances in technology, starry skies, Milky Ways, Auroras, star circles, etc. have become ubiquitous, so seeing a new angle is refreshing.

I really like it Scott, but I'm really curious how the effect was created!  I find it hard to believe that it was a flock of searchlights shining directly in parallel, but that is indeed what it looks like!

Thanks Mike, Terry, Slobodan and Tom.

I am grateful to Slobodan and Brandt for constantly reminding me to keep on the straight and narrow in regards to lens distortion. Here's a straighter version.

Tom: not searchlights, just streetlights. Happens a few times each winter around -25 C and colder. Explanation and pics here.
