FS Broncolor 606 pack, rare 220 volts, 6400 W/S power supply
« on: January 03, 2014, 05:28:58 pm »

This is a Giant beast of a powerpack; its about the size of 4 normal powerpacks. This behemoth is capable of putting out a 6400 WS "pop" though a single cord. A 6400 WS single tube flash head is required for the maximum setting but lower WS heads can be used at lower settings with the benefit of a high power 220 Volt backbone. If you have a 6400 WS head then this is a rare chance for you buy a powerpack that will fire it. If you already have a 606 pack then you should still consider this as a back up as the 606 packs are rare and no longer made.

This thing has enough power to "wake the dead"

Offers? Trades? I know someone out there needs one of these. A couple big 4x7 cumulites on a ceiling rail system and you could be shooting cars indoors at ISO 50. Point them away from the subject and blast your studio walls and you have the ultimate natural fill light. Add a nice Key and a little kicker on the head and your set. Using the room for fill lighting doesn't cause a catchlight so there is nothing distracting from the ones produced from the Key light.

These are good powerful packs, I used them over 20 years ago in large studios and they were ancient then.  The capacitors are starting to age, that is the only caveat as when they go they go, warm them up from minimum a few hundred flashes before putting into regular use.  I remember samys having some used ones 4-5 years ago and they we're selling in the 400-500 range.  Best of luck...

Are you sure that they were 606 packs that Sammys was selling or were they the same generation 303 packs? I have both and the 606 is much larger. Its about 4 times larger then the 303 in size. My 303 pack has outlived two of my later Pulso packs. This one has been taken of and fired regularly to keep it fresh; although its probably been about 8 months since it was fired. It used to power two 4'x7' cumulites on a ceiling mount.

I would keep this if I had more space but right now I am limited to a small room in my buddy's basement. This is really meant for a big warehouse studio.

I saw that I pulso unit was sold on ebay for $1500 with the false advertising that it was a 220 6400 watt version. No surprise that it was re-listed but that is how I am basing the value of this true 6400 watt powerpack.  The new price on the 606 was very high.

$1000

This is a rare item and once it is gone you might not find better or another one. This never seen a storage shed or sat in a warehouse. All of the connections and the cord are prefect. There is no corrosion or signs of abuse. They are no longer made, and this one was regularly cycled for its entire life. This is better then new as they are more likely to go bad if never used. Of course new 6400 Watt packs are not available from Broncolor.

If I still had my Hazylight, I'd snatch it. Are you selling any lights with this unit?

I wasn't planning on it but I might be talked into selling my third HazyLight for the right offer. You should have seen the light that came with this beast... 4'x7' with 2x6400 watt heads, and it was part of twin set.... 6400 Watt Seconds x 4!! You can see why 220volts was required. I might be able to find a 6400 watt flashhead as well.

The PowerPack weighs about 105 Lbs without the cord (but the cord is included with the sale) and it measures roughly 22"x25"x14".

Buyer pays actual shipping costs + materials. The unit can be shipped on a pallet for a lower cost in the US but international shipping will require me to make a wood crate with close cell polyethylene foam. A 4x8" sheet of the foam alone will be ~$80.

Just add large box truck and diesel generator then you would have a very unique architectural lighting kit ;)

I can also ship on the buyers FedEx or DHL account. I got a quote for shipping to Switzerland today via FEDEX and it was ~$600 (plus crating materials). The size and weight of the unit is the issue. But you get what you pay for... 100+lbs of high quality capacitors and such.

To get 6400 joules of output in 1/100 of a second with continuous lighting would require 640,000 watts of lighting. Of course the total amount of light is a better measurement as various light sources have different luminous efficiency. Flash lighting is more efficient then Hot lights which would effect the numbers... Lets say that If flash lighting puts out 2x as much light per joule then 1,280,000 watts of lighting would be required to achieve the same amount of lumens in 1/100 of a second. Working with flash lighting has the advantage that the lights are not always on so less light is wasted and your not frying your subject under literally a million watts of hot lights. Of course not everyone needs short exposure times. Flash lighting is not for everyone but personally I love Broncolor lighting kit.

The 1/100 of a second is a little conservative. Its probably more likely 150-200th of a second, but 50-100th of a second is good for your shutter sync speeds. You can use this with old packard shutters and new copal shutters. It works with standard broncolor flash sync cords and will sync to other flash lighting by means of an analog light sensor. The sensor is also sensitive to infrared and it will work with IR sync. I have an IR flash sync accessory that I might be willing to sell separately.

A new flashtube for your 6400 WS flashhead is twice what I am asking for this pack.

I had some interest from Europe but the cost of shipping was deemed too high. Shipping in the USA would be much more affordable.
