As a happy owner of a pair of E-M1s, I generally agree with Michael Reichmann’s “”The Best New Camera of 2013” call. However, despite very generous and patient email correspondence with him (on New Year’s Eve, no less!), I can't seem to flawlessly enable the functionality of using the back "Lever" to easily shift focus lock from the shutter button to the AEL/AFS button and back again, as he suggests in his new piece.
(You can find these proposed settings near the bottom of
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/best_new_camera_of_2013.shtml#update. Scroll down to the paragraph labeled “Update.”)
Even after doing a Full reset and following his instructions to the letter, I can’t get this to work despite numerous tries. In my case, with the settings he suggests, “Lever 1 UP” works as advertised — the shutter button locks focus and the AEL/AFS button locks exposure. But “Lever 2 DOWN” never permits me to swap focus lock between the shutter and AEL/AFS buttons. In fact, with “Lever 2 DOWN,” the only focus available is Manual.
I’ve promised Michael I won't pester him about this any longer but decided to expose my inability on this forum, in hopes of solving what is, to me, a mystery.
ONE POSSIBLY IMPORTANT NOTE: I’ve learned this morning that his EM-1 is running Firmware Version 1.0. Both of my EM-1s have been updated to Version 1.1. This may be the problem.
So, here’s the challenge: Will someone with an EM-1 running Firmware Ver. 1.1, please try his suggestion as detailed in the above link and tell me if it works on your camera?
In brief, Here’s are the specific settings (offered by Michael) that don't work on either of my Ver 1.1 EM-1s:
Set Custom Menu A / AF Mode to STILL PICTURE...S-AF+MF
Set Custom Menu A / AEL/AFL to S-AF... Mode 1
Thanks and best wishes for the new year to anyone who can shed light on this puzzle.
