Convert Modeling lights to LED
« on: December 30, 2013, 02:57:04 am »

Has anyone seen any pro strobe makers convert their halogen modeling bulbs to LED?
Or better yet, has anyone seen LED lights for replacement of the bayonet mount style lights that stick out?
Sure it maybe tough to match 250w output, although I don't expect it, but even 50watts would help.
I get about 50watts (about 500 lumens) from standard E27 screw base bulbs (holder 3 x 3watt LED's).

I am tired of the heat and the yellow output.I don't rely that much on the modeling lights, just for focus, and a rough idea here and there.
This would also help for those wanting to run on battery power.

Good question!

The new Profoto B1 has a surprisingly bright LED modeling lamp. The color of the LED isn't bad either. http://profoto.com/int/b1

Which make and model of flash are you currently using?

I was hoping to change out the ones on the Photogenic PL monolights. I have a couple other light setups, but due to the remote feature control on these I use them in the studio often. The limiting factor on these lights are that the flash tubes are dome covered fronts, so they can't be too long.

Is Elinchrom the only company moving with better technology?

I think Profoto is a bit ahead of Elinchrom for battery powered lights, especially with the B1.

Unless Elinchrom has released something very recently*, Broncolor and Profoto are ahead of Elinchromfor pack and head systems.

In the category of AC powered monolights I have yet to see something that matches the features of the Paul C. Buff Einstein E640 however Photogenic Solair monolight come close and Hensel seems to be making a comeback as well.

*I need to look at Elinchrom again to see what is very new.

Hensel has released the brightest LED modeling light (40w) on a strobe head through 2014, it boasts a "300 watt halogen equivalent" LED modeling light on their newest "EH Pro Speed LED mini head", the good news is it's ability to be powered from the battery operated Porty Lithium, but the bad news is by the end of 2014 there are "None" available in the United States.  Chimera has said they have a couple for trade shows and testing only, but maybe 2015 they will sell them here.

Hi Eronald,

I seen this light in action and it is extremely bright plus it uses a Bowens mount.

Hi Simon, that looks good - but in fact I think I only need about 10-20% of that power ... and heat and price. The Octa is a closed lightbox, my idea is to avoid fan noise with a cool light, and thus be able to use it for video while recording sound.

Basically, I think I want this without the price and without the flash tube  :)
