OK, so the end of the year is near, and we all get bombarded by lists. So, LuLas, let's hear about your favorite exhibit or photo book of the year.

My local news is that the long-planned move of the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum to St. Louis MO was completed.
There is an exhibit by Peter Dombrovskis at the moment, he's new to me, as is his subject, Tasmania.

One of my favorites for 2013 is the Julia Margaret Cameron exhibit now at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. I got to it last week, and it is superb. It will only be up through January 5, so anyone who can get to New York before then should do it.

Another favorite was an exhibit of some of Vivian Maier's photos at Brandeis University recently.

And just to show that I can sometimes be a pixel peeper with the rest of them, my number one book for 2013 is Jeff Schewe's Digital Print.

My favorite photo books of the year are Nick Brandt's Across The Ravaged Land and Edward Burtynsky's Water. Nick's book is mournful in tone, as it should be, but the photos and printing are superb. The photos in Water, also beautifully reproduced, are often more overtly abstract than Burtynsky's previous work. I like the broader nature of this approach.

I enjoyed these two at the Circulo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. The photos of Burton Norton and the work of Francesc CatalĂ -Roca. The exhibitions are still going but finishing soon. If you find yourself in Madrid these are the best 3 euros you will spend.

The Catala-Roca collection is quite large. His style was photojournalistic and portrayed the Spain of the mid 20th century. It was interesting to see how some of the street images I was trying to capture had already been made by this photographer.
