Rolling Thunder

I realize this is predominantly a record shot but I thought some might enjoy this portrait of a storm.

I like it :-) … though I feel cheated out of some of the foreground.

Belongs in a meteorology textbook - very clear demonstration of updraft etc. I like it. The storm is the subject, foreground isn't too important to me.

The storm is the subject, foreground isn't too important to me.

Bedclothes do not, as a rule, detract from the lover.  It's not that the foreground is important, but rather that its excision draws the eye wayward.  The cloud needs a bit more visual padding to provide the proper repose for such magnificence.  The too-close cropping both makes the subject too forward — literally — and unsettles at least this viewer, who was left wondering how long — in storeys —  the tripod legs had to have been.

I don't find this to be a "record shot" at all.  To the contrary, it's a lovely weather photo.  Sure, a touch more foreground might be nice but I'd be happy to have this in my portfolio as-is.

It is much more than a record shot.
An absolute stunner in fact!

I don't know how big that file is, but I imagine it could work well as a large print, like 24" high.
Definitely more than "just a record shot".
Thanks for posting it.

Thanks to everyone for the comments.

That's why I referred to a record shot.  The shot was made from a ridge that placed me above the immediate foreground and the distal foreground isn't very interesting.  In fact, this shot was an afterthought as I was actually shooting into the light in the opposite direction.

Nancy - it is indeed pretty classic.

+1 - With more foreground and tonal values raised (especially in the min-tones), it would make a stunning landscape. Well seen and captured.

Thanks for your thoughts Terry.  I have had some success with both the tonality and the foreground as suggested.
