Pin Oak
« on: December 17, 2013, 06:05:33 pm »

I'm really enjoying shooting these little guys in the studio. I should be able to get a really good series going.

I hope you do: that's lovely. I'm not entirely convinced that the reflection adds much, though.

Does the reflection bother you because there is only one point of contact?

I particularly like the reflection.
Excellent use of a common object as subject.

What the reflection does is place it in the studio mentally. while a soft reflection would keep us away from thinking that it was surely shot in studio (as obvious as that maybe), and question if the reflection was an afterthought or not.
Fade it out and in my opinion will be a stronger image. I write this as I generally like it, a slight touch and it can be super.

Interesting, Phil.  My first thought when I saw the image was that of a skater on an outdoor pond.  Our minds make different leaps!

I can see that, and I agree, and its nice to apply that personal touch . Though I don't think of a pond as a mirror. Nicely done regardless.

It is shot in the studio. As well as on glass. It would be easy enough to fade out the reflection a touch. Thanks for the reply ;)

Great shot, it makes me want to get out my studio strobes etc from the cupboard, but yes I would agree and suggest a graduated mask to feather the reflection out to black in about half its distance from the tip of the leaf to the edge of the frame, would complete the shot, because having things touching the edge of the frame, or sticking into the edge of the frame, can so easily lead the viewers eye out of the shot, but other than that, it's perfect!
