epson 9880 inks compatibility
« on: December 12, 2013, 07:39:52 am »

Hi,
I wouldn't use third party inks in any of our printers :)
However as we go through quite a lot of cartridges I decided a while ago to open one and see what's left in there.
To my surprise there actually was quite a lot - typical 220ml would have even 30ml left over (!).
So I have started ink "harvesting" and bought the re-fillable cartridges.
Generally I would use originals and from time to time would put 'mine' ones in.
The actual question is - does anybody know if any of the inks are the same across the epson lfp range?
We have 9890, 9880 and 11880 - is light black from 9890 same as for 9880 or 11880? I spent lots of time trying to find an answer to this peculiar question without any luck....
All hope is in you fellow members :)

Just curious if you wait till the printer stops and says the cartridge needs replaced or when the panel says its low?

I usually wait until printer says 'X' so in its eyes completely empty. I do understand that epson can not let the printer to ever use up all ink inside as it will sooner or later damage the printer... But that is not rally a point of this thread
Does anybody know about the ink differencies?

Ok, so I put in a search at a 3 rd party supplier using epson's number for light black and it came back that the
Same ink is used in these machines.

I think you just have to compare epson's numbers to the models your asking about. Hope that helps.

What I was saying is you can compare whatever models you want, just takes a little effort.

From an Epson 7880/ 9880 brochure: Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology, Depending upon media – produces a black density up to 2.5 with an L value of 2.9, 3.5 picoliter droplet size.

From an Epson 11880 brochure: Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology, produces a black density up to 2.5 with an L value of 2.9, 3.5 picoliter droplet size.

From an Epson 7890/ 9890 brochure: Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology, Exceptional black density up to 2.6 with an L value ~3.0, 3.5 picoliter droplet size.

The Epson 7900/ 9900 share the same cartridges with the 7890/ 9890 with the addition of orange and green.

It "seems like" the 9880 and 11880 inks are the same, and the 9890 inks may be the same (except for one of the blacks?). Maybe you would save a little by buying the least expensive 700ml cartridges and refilling for the 9880, but it also seems like it would be a lot of extra work.
