Promise Pegasus2 now shipping
« on: December 11, 2013, 07:30:14 pm »

Promise is now shipping within 24 hours (in some geos) their TB2 baseb Pegasus2 series.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/HE154VC/A/promise-pegasus2-r8-24tb-8-by-3tb-raid-system

Potential buyers in Japan will be a bit less lucky since the wait is said to be 3-4 weeks.

Interestingly, they offer a diskless version of the 4 bay unit, but this option doesn't appear to be available for the R6 and R8 versions. They are seemingly positioning the diskless version of the R4 as a means for legacy Mac Pro users to migrate their internal drives smoothly to a R4 together with a new mac pro.

Another regrettable caveat is that the 32TB R8 version seems to be populated with slower 5900 rpm drives.

Cheers,
Bernard

Where did you read that they offer a diskless version?  I don't see it on the Promise site.

But strangely, it is not listed on B&H site.

Thanks, Bernard.

I can buy a Seagate 3TB 7200rpm HDD for $117.  $117 x 4 + $699 = $1167 for a total of 4x3TB = 12TB raw capacity.  The 4x2TB unit is being priced by Promise at $1499.  What am I missing?

Nothing.

That's the price of having Promise act as the system integrator for you.

Digging further into this, there is currently no hard disk compatibility list to be found on the Promise site for the Pegasus 2.

I have sent a query to their customer support a day ago, currently waiting for an answer.

Cheers,
Bernard

Thanks.

I'll wait for the official answer from their support team.

The wording of their current document very much conveys the impression that they are artificially limiting the type/capacity of disks they support in their diskless version.

I hope this is just a misunderstanding because if it is not this would cast an ugly light on Promise.

How stupid would you have to be to decide to release a diskless version but make it useless by limiting the drives to old models???

Either you only sell systems with disks or you sell diskless and provide reasonnable support to popular NAS disk types.

Cheers,
Bernard

Got their answer. They just sent the public list of supported drives.

This makes the diskless version of the Pegasus2 useless in my view.

I find making this available for sales extremely misleading.

Cheers,
Bernard

It's looking like either a LaCie 5Big or a pair of 8TB OWC Mercury Elite Pros for me. Plus a ThunderTek PX-Q6G to connect my existing FirmTek 4 bay enclosure.

Hello, I have a question: Will the thunderbolt 2 interface make any difference with just 4 drives?

If not : Are you planing on replacing them with SSDs or was there other reason ?

Thanks,

what about these datatale enclosures...good, bad?...with these new macpro's it feels like i'm needing to start all over again with info about all this...guess these would work fine for photo use, not sure about video...

Since I am upgrading my system, I want to take advantage of the latest technology available. The MacPro has Thunderbolt2 ports that allow 2 channels of 20GB/sec data transfer instead of 4 channels of 10GB/sec. Theoretically it allows more data to be pushed through at once, which as I understand it, only benefits 4K video at this time. I do find myself taking and editing more video and if I decide to upgrade to a 4K in the future, I don't want my storage device to be the bottleneck in the chain.

Hi which  Pegasus2 is this one? The read speed are way down.

Maybe you will want to rerun the tests? Your Pegasus2 could have an issue.
Better to discover it now than when is full of data.

Best regards,

Too bad that Promise has fouled things up by restricting the drive options for the enclosure.

Would there be a noticeable difference in performance between Pegasus2 and a comparable USB3 external drive solution (assuming hard drives, not SSDs) hooked to the nMP?

I stopped it mid read, it runs in 8 second cycles. If you look at the recorded chart on the lower right of each readout screen, you will get a better idea about the scores.

It is the Promise Pegasus2 R4 that comes with four two terabyte drives. I did stop the test with the screen capture so the right readout is a little misleading. The recorded scores in green on the lower right give a better idea of speeds. This is a speed test of the RAID 5 configuration which will not be as fast as all 4 drives in RAID 0. The R4 will not be as fast as its counterparts (R6 and R8) with more drives to increase the speed.
