Saskatchewan safari
« on: December 11, 2013, 02:38:30 pm »

From last Saturday, -28, plus a wind chill close to -40.

So no 360 panorama.  :D

I like the shallow depth of field. Initially, I was very slightly  bothered by the central position [in the frame] of the bison but in the end, I think it's fine.

Conveys the cold, that's for sure. I too like the shallow DoF.

Wonderful shot Scott ( a thought...I might consider bringing up the highlighted areas of central bull...and some of the shadows...+5-10 LR exposure and/or shadows to make it stand out "just a little bit" more from the bg figures). /B

Thanks for the feedback!

Brandt, I have dodged and curved the bull a bit, lowered the contrast on the rest. Also, this shot was selected and processed because the subject is a bit distinct from his friends, so we are on the same track.

Chris, I looked at BW but prefer the colours. BW might work well on a close-up of the coat, as in Walker's recent leopard image.

In these temperatures my technique is simply to check the histogram, leave everything on auto, and concentrate on finding a composition.

Yes, Isaac, they seem a bit taller than the Forester. We were surrounded three times that afternoon, somewhat to the consternation of my European guests.

This is great and certainly conveys the chill in the air.  The shallow DOF is perfect.  Fantastic image.

These bison are indeed HUGE. I like this shot. I get the impression that they are considerably warmer than you are.

Thanks, Bret, Paulo and Nancy: glad you liked it.

Hope you get to see these for yourself soon, Isaac. Another interesting experience is to have them wander past your tent in the night, you can feel their footsteps shake the ground.

I have seen these creatures, and believe me, a Forester doesn't seem like great protection should a bull decide he doesn't want it on his turf.
