Chimera

Made from 2 different photographs.  Does it work well enough to keep?

Oh yes!  Stunning.  I love the light.  This is most certainly a keeper.

The only small nit I have with it is that power line (or is it a telephone line) running along the lower quarter of the photo.  I don't want to look at it but because it is there my eye keeps coming back to it.  Might be worth spending time cloning that out.  The image as a whole is so good I think it would be worth spending some time removing any distractions.

I'm curious, why did you call it Chimera?

It's a very spectacular and dramatic view on that little hill town. The rays of light put the towers in evidence as if they were protected of the stormy weather. One of the best San Gimignano shot that I have seen recently.

FWIW, I'd darken the edges of the town so that the strong rays don't look like they are coming from additional suns; only the bits under the rays that are visible through the clouds need to be so bright - and again, the marriage of moods is beautiful.

I appreciate your thoughts and critiques, especially since this forum is my only source for informed comments.
I live pretty much in a vacuum as far as photography is concerned, residing in a small town in NC where none of
my friends or acquaintances are interested in photography.

"I'm curious, why did you call it Chimera?"
From Wikipedia:  A chimera or chimaera is a single organism (usually an animal) that is composed of two or more different populations of genetically distinct cells that originated from different zygotes involved in sexual reproduction. If the different cells have emerged from the same zygote, the organism is called a mosaic. Chimeras are formed from at least four parent cells (two fertilized eggs or early embryos fused together). Each population of cells keeps its own character and the resulting organism is a mixture of tissues. Chimeras are typically seen in animals; there are some reports of human chimerism

The sky came from a photo from the NC coast and the ground from San Gimignano, hence the final image came from two disparate sources for its DNA.

To the estimable Rob C.:  Done

Again, thank you all.  And grateful thanks to Lula.  What little I know about photography I learned from this site and its accomplished denizens.

Hi Dale, I usually agree with Ed, but I don't have a problem with the power line. Rob has a point if he's talking about the left side of the town. That end needs to be closed down a bit to center attention. But it's a superb shot.

Your image inspires me, with or without that annoying power line.

You've just described the last 32 years of my life. Only the names of the towns differ, the experiences are identical in any language.

Beautiful!  The various changes are all for the better.  I'd be further tempted to add contrast or clarity to the brightest areas of the sky.

Dale - I really like this one, it seems to have something of the style of an old grand master painting about it. But what I really, really like, is that even though you tell us how you processed it by combining two images together (blended or overlayed with masks I assume), it doesn't actually looked processed at all and that for me is one of the hardest tricks to pull off these days, because we have so many tools and techniques and plugins etc available to us, that we are all too often tempted to push those sliders just that little bit too far. So to make an image that actually looks like a simple but well taken photograph, rather than an image obscured below a layer of visible processing, has become so hard for us to do and do well, but you have managed to do so here.

Bravo!

Dave

I hope I won't bore anyone, but I simply selected out the original sky and pasted in the new sky.  Then a lot of fiddling.
The two original photos are posted below.  I didn't recognize the potential in the ground image at first, but kept coming back
to it. By the way, I have cleaned the sensor since the San Gimignano image was taken.

Thanks for your interest,
Dale
