"Photographer Ansel Adams's epic American landscapes did as much as John Wayne's films to create and maintain the legend of the Old West."

Ironic that the very, very best came from Sergio Leone, out of Sorbas, in the Almeria desert in Spain. But at least Clint looked the part. Sold a lot of ponchos in Scotland. I know; I photographed some.

I'd be giving more credit to John Ford than John Wayne.

Yup.   John Ford did more than Ansel too.  Yup.  His iconic western scenes often included Monument Valley.  (Did all Indians live there?)  Yup.

Rob.  Loved  the spaghetti westerns especially The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Redwoods?  Pacific coast?  Yosemite?  Those parts are not considered part of the Old West to Hollywood.

Even the Hollywood presentation of the Old West has covered more ground than you seem to suggest.
