D7100 or D610
« on: December 08, 2013, 03:52:37 PM »

I am looking for a backup to my D800E.  Leaning towards a D7100 (because of the 1.3x factor) but really like the idea of the D610.

Any advice would be welcome please.

I bought a D7100 as a second camera, not a backup, for use with my D800. It has nearly the same sensor only in an APS-C size for the 1.5 image crop and it uses the same battery as the D800. My last 5 Nikon DSLRs all used different batteries and different battery chargers. Nikon did this with the D610 and even yet again with the Df. Someone needs to slap the people who let this happen.

Bad enough to need to have two sets of cards with both CompactFlash and SDHC cards and special readers, but to have to take two sets of batteries and two different chargers is truly crazy. When I discovered that by some miracle the D7100 uses the same batteries as the D800 I was in nirvana. Don't tell the people at Nikon or the D7200 will use some other battery type.

The D7100 also has the f8 autofocus sensors, like those with the D800, which is a big help when using teleconverters or even telephoto lenses with low contrast subjects of low lighting situations.

I like being able to use a DX camera with a telephoto and a FX camera with a wide to normal zoom lens, or to have a medium telephoto like the 70-200mm with the DX camera while using the 500mm with the FX camera. With this setup I have the equivalent of a 105-300mm lens on one camera and the 500mm on the other so I can cover more range without changing lenses or adding or removing teleconverters and letting dust inside the camera.

Currently I run with a D800E as my primary body and a D610 as my backup/second/smaller body. Prior to the D610 I was using a D7100 in that same backup/second body/smaller body role.

All three bodies use the same battery and same charger, which is a huge plus. My needs for a second body were that it be smaller to fit in the last remaining space in my backpack for landscape use, which is why I don't use another D800 in that role.

The D7100 had nice image quality but ultimately two things led me back to having two FX bodies instead of one FX and one DX body:

1) I simply prefer the viewfinder of the FX bodies.
2) The D610 has cleaner shadows when one has to shove the images around in raw a bit. While the D7100 has IMO the best quality cropped camera low ISO image quality, I still prefer the image quality from the two FX bodies - it's shadow range is not in the same league as the D800E or D610, and of course, the high ISO is better on the D610.

I've not had any issues with the AF on the D610; this was a major concern because I had show-stopping major issues with the 39pt AF system in the D7000 I had a year or so ago that I truly hated.

This all being said, the D7100 has very nice image quality and if you want a DX body and shoot mostly at lower ISO, you will still be able to get a lot of quality out of the body; you just might have to be more careful of underexposure since you don't have the range in the shadows.
