Showers
« on: November 29, 2013, 10:35:38 am »

I've had this shot around for a while but I've have never been entirely happy with it.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome.

Why!? Looks like a great shot to me. The only nitpick would be the halos along the ridges, but that is easy to remove.

Same here. It's a very fine shot but it needs some fine-tuning to reduce the dark areas.
I think that the photo is really worth spending five or ten minutes to address that.

... what is your subject ?

I'll go out on a limb here, but let me try a wild guess: errr... showers?

And I do too.

Pretty broad subject.

Whatever Slobodan says is usually right on. This time, for instance. Lovely shot.

I like it. The sky could have been more co-operative and provided a better structure to compose with.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

I think because I like some of the elements but they don't all quite come together as a whole.  Yes the halos need to go.  I'm not sure what produced them as I didn't do any brushing on the hills.

my nitpick would be, what is your subject ?

Hmmm -  that sounds like a perfect opening to go on a philosophical rant about why I do photography but I'll spare you that one.  To me the shot is about the play between the light and the rain and what it does to the illumination of the hills.  So I guess you could say the subject is what I like and find satisfying. :)

Yep.  I'll put in the word. :D  It was a fine evening though.

I was going to say that the subject is light, so I guess I'm pretty close.

I really like the image especially the blue ridge which livens the relatively monochromatic parts. Certainly one that looks great as is.

Did you apply a general Clarity?

Yes the halos need to go.

We're not talking about the haze between the mountains here, are we? That needs to stay.  :)

Now that you offered that example, it is a good opportunity to point out the difference. Haze is more gently, uniformly and horizontally distributed between ridges, while halos tend to closely and narrowly follow the edge, even if it goes diagonally. In your example, green arrows point to a haze, red to halos.

Excellent. Glad we're on the same wavelength.

Yep - global clarity set at 32.  The result seems more subtle in ACR than in the final down sampled jpeg but is indeed there.  Such mistakes keep me humble.  :D  Thanks for focusing me in.

Yep - global clarity set at 32...

I thought so. Then try a little trick I often resort to: use a brush with a negative clarity (-32) and go along the high-conrast ridge edges alone.

The sky looks very dramatic and full of interest. The foreground seems a bit less interesting?
