Centering on New Canvas

When I create a new canvas of say 16x24 then I want to drag and drop a 15x20 image onto this canvas is there a way to center this image automatically by a function in Photoshop CS3 or can I only place the image freehand?

If you hold down the Shift key while dragging your image onto the new canvas it should centre automatically.

another way is to just change the canvas size of your original image to the new size you desire.
