One would wonder about the standard of paper and photo reproduction, not that magazines care much about that sort of triviality nowdays (OK, unfair to the higher end glossies, but plenty don't). The endearing beauty of magazines is that they are an object that you like to handle and hold and to attain this sort of quality you need a proper press with proper offset printing, not digital squirting. It betrays the belief held by many IT type people that it is purely content that matters rather than content and form when it comes to spreading the printed word. But then, there are so many media outlets filled by shallow and insipid content that one wonders if even the actual words matter, just so long as there is a collection of them in the appropriate dialogue boxes on the site.
The other point is that magazines are often browsed before purchase, tricky with this system.
