DP3 Merril Live view problem
« on: November 24, 2013, 07:28:57 pm »

I noticed that what I see on the screen has sometimes nothing to do with reality.

Example 1: Screen shows really bright picture and "+3.0" but actual picture turns out way darker.

Example 2: Screen looks like I'm still at f/2.8 (lots of bokeh, very shallow depth of field) but I'm actually at f/8 and once I take the picture it has the expected, larger, depth of field.

In both cases the result is OK, but the preview on the screen is completely wrong. Why? I'm using Manual mode.

This sound trange. You might try to tell your local SIGMA SAV about this. IMHO it is a little problem but they will know better than me.

Talk to Sigma. I haven't seen this behavior. Do you have the current firmware? 1.02, I believe.

I have a feeling the live view always is on "Automatic" while I only ever shoot manual. Exampke: While I may be at base ISO, f/5.6, 1/100 and that's why the picture actually would be way underexposed, the screen gives a preview for the "correct" shutter speed and a higher ISO. I'm not sure if this is an error, or maybe just a weird design choice? In any case do you know if there is a hidden menu option somewhere to change the live view's behavior?

There is no DOF preview on the screen of the DP Merrill cameras. You need to take the shot to see the result.
IMHO the manual preview's luminance is normalized for better visibility. Use A-mode or histogram for proper exposure judgement.
