Overcast Garriga
« on: November 23, 2013, 10:57:44 am »

Garriga is the name for the typical meditarranean vegetation found on Mallorca.

This image was pretty flat out of the scanner and didn't express, was I was seeing and feeling when I was at the scene.
Using a more traditional / photographic workflow I couldn't get out of it what I wanted.
So I decided to boldly edit in photoshop using a bunch of techniques I have learned in the last years.
The image surely is no more fully in the realm of photography, but in the borderlands between photography and digital art / painting.
Its an attempt to express a scene that usually looks dull in a photo, but gives me something I want to express.
So - here is my second attempt of exploring these "borderlands".
The second attached image is the basic edit from which I started.
And yes - no HDR or HDRish technique or plugin was used.

Cheers
~Chris

I like what you have done, Christoph. I looked at the image before I read your comments. The first thing I thought was..."It looks like a water color."

In the spirit of the We Make the Path by Walking thread, I prefer the original.

Your version is quite dramatic and the original is quite bland. If it does what you want, it's perfectly fine.

The clouds ruin a lovely shot. They look like cgi in a Superman movie. Yuk, yuk, yuk. And if you say well that's what you were feeling, I say repress your feelings. The world need a rest from portentous clouds. I know it because I'm very guilty myself.

Yeah, the clouds are somewhat exaggerated and distract from the hard work spent on the Garriga itself. They reflect the drama I felt seeing the scene, but many people are oversaturated with this - I think for a print I'd pull them back a bit. maybe I'll make a next iteration and post it here.
