Rice paper
« on: November 22, 2013, 12:56:38 pm »

Can anyone recommend a good rice paper that comes in wide rolls--maybe 40" or so. I want to photograph my wife's drawings, made on mulberry paper and black ink with Asian brush, and then print them large. Then she will incorporate them into collages.

Thanks for any suggestions

"Rice paper" is usually a misnomer and about as descriptive as saying "cotton rag." Most papers of this type are made of gampi or mulberry fiber. Having said that, Hahnemühle now offers a "rice" paper that may or may not be made of rice fiber. I'm not sure what sizes it's available in.

Take a look at the offerings of http://www.hiromipaper.com, for a wide selection of Japanese and other Asian papers. Also, Freestyle Photographic, http://www.freestylephoto.biz/Inkjet/Awagami, now offers a selection of Awagami inkjet papers.

Yes, Hahnemühle have a 'rice' paper in 44 inch rolls. I doubt it is made from rice; all they claim is α-cellulose, which could  come from almost anything.

Thanks, guys. We'll check them out.

By the way, any opinions on their archival status or general aging behavior.

Apart from Hanhemuhle's "guarantees archival standards" statement in the spec sheet, I don't know of any testing on the paper. There have been a few brief remarks on Lula, including this one: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/rice_is_nice.shtml

If the printing paper you use will have any obvious texture of its own (as some I tried did), and the photograph of your wife's paintings picks up the texture of the paper she painted on, your print could show printed texture from the original artwork overlaid on the texture of your printing paper -- a possibly very weird result.  Let us know how this works out for you.  Finding some nice rice paper without texture, and adding some translucent inkAid to make it inkjet-receptive, might be a good solution.  --Barbara

I read this a couple of weeks ago and this paper sounds intriguing  supposed to be released in December...

Looks interesting, but expensive at over US$10 a metre for a 17" roll. I have used a few Mitsubishi/Pictorico kenaf/mulberry papers, but 'high ink density' wasn't one of theings I would associate with them.

Barbara beat me to it!  One of the studios in town teaches a lot of workshops on 'modern analogue' techniques, including this.
