BMPCC + Voigtlander 17mm
« on: November 20, 2013, 09:14:26 pm »

I've barely touched the Pocket Cine Camera since it's arrival, but this morning's delivery of the Voigtlander 17mm F/0.95 got me playing around a bit after I picked the boy up from school.  I think this rig is going to be a lot of fun!  The beautiful bokeh of the "old world" looking Voigtlanders and the gradability of the BMPCC files makes for a lovely, organic image.

I use the 40mm and 28mm Voigtlander pancakes on my BMCC and have been pretty happy with the look it gives. A little green color shift but not bad. I have the 20mm also and its almost un usable. The 40mm is the best though. When using with Tiffen screw on ND's they definitely keep the rig small and balanced for hand holding well. Too bad that 17mm isn't a pancake, that camera body is so small the 17mm must counterweight it in a bad way, correct? Perhaps your using it on sticks though.

If you wanted to go wider here is a 12mm ultra 16mm t 1.3 in Arri Pl mount.

It's an $8,000 lens and they even go as wide as 6mm.

Only downside is with the bmcc it'll look like your just holding a lens waiting for the camera to show up . . . well the other downside is a set of 5 lenses will cost you 40 grand.

There are a few smaller, cheaper wide options in M4/3rds.

Hmmm, think I'll stick with my Olympus 12mm f/2.   ;)

The Oly 17mm f/1.8 lacks the Voigtländer's distinctive optical look (and speed) but makes for a more balanced package overall (see attached photo). I regret I've had so little time to give my BMPCC the workout it deserves. I bought the Voigtländer set specifically with video in mind too, yet I've used them only for stills.   :-X  Time to get the hell outta Michigan and go somewhere warm & pretty for awhile.

Organic or just out of focus ?

I love using the BMPCC with an array of lenses, but might be worth considering using the focus peaking.

OOF with the BMPCC just makes me wonder. I have been using the thing for a while but I simply don't seem to get sharp footage out of it. I have tried a number of different lenses by now but it remains soft. Anyone else having the same thing?
