Epson R1400 dark prints?
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:53:57 pm »

Hi, Hope someone can give some advice?
I no the Epson photo R1400 printer is getting on a bit as far models go but it's what I have so!!,
I print from Lightroom 5 and use Lightroom to control the output to the printer, I have checked and double checked all the settings but the prints are coming out dark, for example I have a scene of blue sky with granite rocks in the foreground, on the monitor (NEC calibrated with i1 display Pro) the image looks great but on print the sky is a darker blue and the rocks are dark so it's hard to make out any detail there, I have tried using the option to increase brightness from the print module in L/R by 50% but that causes the sky to become to bright and the rocks still without much detail. I also tried letting the printer control everything but although a little better the foreground is still to dark, I am using Epson premium Glossy paper.
Any advice or tips much appreciated.
Thanks

The question that immediately comes to mind is how are you viewing the print? You will only get close to a monitor-print match if the illumination on the print makes the paper white as "bright" as the monitor white. You need quite a high level of illumination to achieve that - for example, if your monitor is calibrated to 120cd/m2, you need a 60W lamp at about 18" from the print to match the whites. How does that compare to what you have?

Hi, Thank you for the reply.
In response to the light requirement, I am in a room with a very large patio window with a bright sky outside so really using natural light to view the print/s.
Again thank you for the reply
