Jug Handle State Natural Reserve
« on: November 12, 2013, 10:58:28 am »

I've had a bit of a dry spell for landscape inspiration, but here's a scene that caught my eye this weekend.

This was taken in the morning just before the surfers and tourists arrived. I wasn't seeing anything, so I started climbing around on the rocks with my kids, and then just as we were leaving I noticed this potential shot and went back for it.

Although I didn't have my main camera with me, the new Ricoh 18mm f/2.8 lens and sensor impressed me. I've been getting acustomed to needing to do some NR even at base ISO with the OMD. Not finding any noticeable noise in the shadows with the GR was a pleasant surprise.

I tried two slightly different angles, and bracketted the exposures assuming I would use HDR if its dynamic range wasn't up to the task, but didn't need it – the 0eV exposure was right on. Colors from DNG and OOC jpeg were consistently great in all the frames I took that day, and WB pretty much acceptable on auto. A bit of shadow recovery and sharpening was about all I really needed to do in post.

Let me know what you think.

Works for me ...
I like the repetitive angular shapes and diagonals in the rocks and shadows. Might even be worth a try in B&W, but I do like the color of the blue sky and water contrasting the starkness of the rocks.

Thanks David. I was kind of thinking the same thing.

Might even be worth a try in B&W,...

It has a sort of 3-D quality in monochrome that draws me in, but I guess color makes it a bit more inviting?

Interesting textures and composition, but the light is a bit too harsh.

Interesting geometric shapes. I prefer the B&W but I find that the light is a bit flat, especially on the rocks.
