Epson ABW settings for Gold Mono Silk?
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:44:04 am »

If anyone is using the ABW with Ilford Gold Mono Silk, what settings have worked best for you the 38xx printer?  Glossy or Semi-Gloss?  The latter worked better for me for Gold Fibre Silk, but the Mono silk paper seems glossier.  Oddly, for regular printing, Ilford is recommending Semi Matte on its site.

Thanks, in advance.

I just looked up the printer settings for Gold Mono Silk at the Ilford website and they recommend the Premium Glossy setting for the 3880, but when I looked at the settings for the 3800, it clearly says Proofing Paper Semimatte? Something's wrong at the website or I've made an error. There are not significant differences between the 3800 and the 3880 except for the vivid magenta inks. It doesn't make sense that Ilford would recommend a glossy setting for one and a matte setting for the other. Anyone else run into this or did I do an oops?

I suspect an error on the 3800 website, but in any case I would just try both settings with your favorite papers and see which looks better to you.

I've now tried both Semigloss and Glossy using ABW on the 3800.  They are almost indistiguishable, with perhaps a little [barely noticeable] increase in contrast and slightly greater separations in the lightest gray tones, with the glossy setting.  [16 bit, ABW, perceptual, neutral, glossy, dark].  What is striking is the absence of any bronzing or gloss differential.  These look like F surface glossy prints!

I also tried QTR, and results are similar with it and ABW, with perhaps a little less contrast and more separation in darker middle tones in the former case.

On the 3800 for Ilford Gold Mono Silk, I just tried the media setting of Premium Photo Paper Glossy and Ultra Premium Photo Luster.  Both work WAY better than what Ilford recommends on their site (Semimatte).
