Which of these do you think is the better image?

Thanks for your input.

#2 is a wonderful portrait of a quite interesting guy. #1 doesn't work for me at all.

Both strong. Could be two different people.

They're both good, but I much prefer the first, as it tells a more compelling and complex story. The second is a nice portrait, but it doesn't say much to me about the man.

Tough call.  I prefer the processing of #1, and it works well as an environmental portrait, but I love the face in #2.  Can you process #2 similarly to #1?

They evoke  two different emotional responses. Either would stand alone depending on what you want to say. Or as part of a longer series to portray something about life.

No.1 takes the prize; the other could be any old studio shot.

I see what you mean, Rob, about #1. The man is in a his element. The second stands only on what we read into the face.

Thank you all. These are from a trip I took this summer. I met Two Ravens on the mountain. We were camping in the same area. He's a gold miner among other things. We were on our way down to the creek to shoot him panning and ran into small group of hippies. They invited us to stay for lunch and we stayed for three days. I made some great friends and memories. The images were a bonus. I'm thinking about these for a competition and you can only submit one per subject. I hadn't worked the second until the other day. Now I'm conflicted. I really do appreciate your thoughts.
