usage of CPL/PL on digital cameras (DB & DSLR )

A question hidden in my mind so long :

I found many of photographers( 6 or 7 out of 10)  always mounted a CPL/PL on their lenses (DSLR & DB cameras) when I am outing for taking photos. But the CPL/PL spent 1 to 2 stops (lost shutter speed)& may be lost some photo quality . What are their thinking that why CPL/PL always on their lenses ?

Hi,

Polarisers can improve saturation on sky and reduce non specular reflections. I very seldom use polarisers. Good filters have little negative effect on image quality.

Note that polarisers don't work well on wide angles, because polarisation varies with angle of reflected light.

polarizers can also aid in cutting through atmospheric haze

I carry a polarizer in my kit, but hardly ever use it. But there are times when it's great to have(as previously mentioned, reducing reflections, simply becoming a minor "ND" filter, etc...)

Peronally, I use 5x7(LF) and MF film. Water (to me) always looks better smoothed over, so long(ish) exposures are de-rigueur

I use a CPL when necessary (usually to cut reflections on water, foliage etc) but wouldn't leave one on all the time.

Landscapes: CPL in pocket, available for annoying reflection and darkening sky when in an appropriate direction.
Birds: I don't have a CPL to fit my 400mm f/5.6, and anyway I want all the light I can get.
Macro: Use CPL rarely for really annoying reflection, again, I want all the light I can get.
