Cable length usb3 with leaf/phase one.
« on: October 28, 2013, 03:34:15 pm »

It appears to be rather tricky to get a good working long solution for the USB connectors on the leaf/phase one backs.

Here are some of the experiences I had :

MBP retina 15" :
couldn't get it working over 4.7 Mtrs.

Sony DUO 13 :
Very stable 4.7 Mtrs tethertools USB 3 cable designed for leaf but also worked on the phase one
Now with the phase one I couldn't get a real solid connection when I combined the 4.7 usb3 with a 4.7 USB 2 extension cable (both tethertools) it would work but not stable, however with my leaf credo60 I've been running this combination rock solid for the last week. It's speedy (don't feel a real difference between FireWire 9.7mtr and the usb3 to usb2 extension cord. We will test a USB 3 extension soon.

The main surprise is for me that it seems my sony vaio duo13 runs better than my MBP with the medium format combi.

While I don't know the specifics, and I know that some other people might....If I am not mistaken, even though USB is a standard I don't believe that there is any standard for the amount of power they can put out and thus it is possible that one laptop which can send more power through can work with longer cables. Once you start attaching multiple cables via connectors or whatever, I know this sucks more power and it might not be possible for some laptops to give it enough power to work. While again, I don't know if this would work, maybe if you tried a powered USB hub in between cables it MIGHT help...Just an idea...

Powered USB hubs is not a Solution (at least not for me on location).
In the studio it will work but on location it's useless because often there simply is no power.

For the workshops I'm experimenting with windows 8.1 and miracast. Keeping a sony duo13 close to me and sending the images to the display(s) via miracast.

I'm not using USB3 but I had lots of trouble using 30' usb active extensions on a MBP.  Never any problems on a PC laptop.

I've found I can only get a reliable connection when using the first usb port on the MBP..that is the one closest to the front of the computer.  Also I discard the active extension at the first sign of connection errors.  The seem to go bad after 6 months or so of hard use.

Did you try tethertools ?
I had a lot of problems with normal cables, since we moved to tethertools everything works fine.

No, have not tried them.  But I found a brand that works great, for a very reasonable cost.
