Bisti Badlands?
« on: October 28, 2013, 02:45:39 am »

So, I'll be out west doing a workshop with Alain Briot doing the Antelope Canyon Fine Art Photography Summit...

So, I'll be driving from Chicago to Page, AZ...after the workshops I'm going to try to hit a few spots in the SW I've never been to and one of those locations is the Bisti Badlands...

It's pretty isolated (seems the closest motels are in Farmington). Just wanted to ping the group to see if anybody has any advice regarding the Bisti Badlands? Any info appreciated!

I have been there a couple of times. It's an easy 35 miles from Farmington down 371 (Bisti Hwy) to the entrance which is about a 2 mile drive to the parking area. there's interesting formations all around the parking area but it's recommended to walk in from the parking area about 2 miles to see more interesting stuff. I am including a couple of links…one showing a map…I would take the walk toward the cracked eggs area that you will see on the linked map…… the whole place is one of the strangest and interesting landscapes you have ever seen….like being on another planet…and very strange if nobody else is there…which could be the case at this time of year…….happy shooting.

It is recommended that if you are going to walk in a couple of miles and want to shoot at sunset, you should take a gps and set your starting at the south parking lot where you will start from and take a very bright flashlight to find your way out once it starts to get dark.

Of course you don't have to walk in to see interesting formations…there are things near the parking area and also on the roadside of the main highway as you approach the Bisti entrance.

I've been there only once, but I agree with Wolfman's assessment. It is well worth the effort. Definitely walk in a couple of miles for the best stuff.
Have a great trip!

Here's some more useful info:

http://www.annestravels.net/bisti-2/ …..looks like the south area is the most worthwhile.

I'm eager to get back to Bisti some day, with a GPS this time. I only had a compass on the first visit, and no maps. It was still fantastic, and I found my way back to the car OK, but I missed a lot of the best stuff.

Jeff,

I haven't been to the north, but I've been to the south a few times pre-2002. Wish I had GPS and digital capture then! Amazing location. I have a friend Robert Chavez who guides photographers there, but I'm not sure if he still does it. He basically told me the south section is where its at!

You might find this one interesting as well.  Hell, his whole site, for that matter.

Definitely have a GPS trail back to your car, it's a maze (and amazing as well!)
