Autumn Sunset in the La Sal Mountains
« on: October 28, 2013, 01:34:10 am »

The La Sal Mountains near my home in Moab, Utah are exceptionally rich with opportunities for landscape, wildlife and adventure photographers.  On this evening my son and I enjoyed an absolutely stellar sunset at Warner Lake just as the aspen leaves were transitioning into their finest autumn color.  Oh, and we had the lake entirely to ourselves.  Well, that's if you don't include the pine marten, numerous deer and bobcat we saw earlier in the evening.  Photographers crowd in, shoulder to shoulder, at Mesa and Delicate Arches, but they rarely venture into the high country.  Shh, don't tell anyone. ;-)

Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105mm lens and a handheld Singh-Ray 3 stop GND on an Induro CT213 tripod with an Acratech ballhead.

Superb sunset with a very relaxing mood.
You're right, I've never seen too many people up there.

I rarely say things like this.  For me, your photograph captured the scene so well that it became a window to the place.  I had to wonder if there were any trout biting?

As far as I'm concerned, this is the ultimate compliment. Thank you! I didn't see any trout rising at the time but then again, I was a bit preoccupied. ;-)

Well it is a gorgeous photo no doubt. But it just doesn’t seem to have appropriate colors.

So I have to do the emperor has no cloths thing here, there seems to be a large magenta color cast. Which is all well and good if that is where you are going with this photo? For me, I applied a PS Color Balance mask with +20 Magenta/Green and -35 Yellow/Blue which to my eye not only makes the overall color balance better, it also seems to really help the colors in the water reflections and lightens the greens and makes the tree line pop while still giving a sense of evening warmth.

I'll probably be flogged within and inch.......but, at my first glance I felt the color balance was way out of kilter. I thought for sure it would be in the red channel but turned out the blue channel was about 45 points out of synch with the rest of the image. Changed, it makes a somewhat different image. As to what was in the RAW file, quien sabe...?

For reference, same scene a couple of evenings ago (1 week later?):

And some fun lining up with the shadows:
