Epson 9600 Ink switch
« on: October 21, 2013, 06:58:12 pm »

When I switch inks, from Photo Black to Matte Black the printer flush the lines and dump some ink.
My simple question is:

Does the printer only flush the black line?

Does the printer flush all colors at the time black ink is switched? And if the answer to this one is yes, why all colors?

Thanks

According to my 7600/9600 manual, all colours are flushed down the lines after the black ink changeover. As to why, I am not at all sure. Maybe only Epson engineers know the real reason!

If you do a little research online there is a way to flush only the black. I don't have that info at my fingertips.

Hugo, this might be the article that Jim was thinking of: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/printer/7600-9600_swap_black_ink.html

Thanks Brian
Looks like it will save a lot of cash in printer juice.
I will try it soon and report on it

Thanks for the help, it did work perfectly.

The only hiccup is that at the time of printing it flash a "system error" on the printer.
The paper I downloaded tells me to download a new driver.
I find out that the problem is the need to ope the driver in the status tab, it was still showing Matte Ink, just a click to switch it to Photo ink so it match, perfect after that.

I printed 4 times a block of pure black 36 x 20 on cheap matte paper to fluch the matte ink on the tube from the cartridge to the head and its done.

Thanks again for the help

Have you tried your matt paper with the photo black ink? For many, the prints are still very nice with many papers. Worth a test before changing the ink over.

In doing my own testing with my 3880, 9800 & 9900, though the MK showed a slightly richer black, the same image on the same paper with PK was still quite nice and was a very acceptable print.

Showing my samples to many folks coming to my studio, few could discern the difference and those who could see the difference didn't think it mattered too much.

Hi Langier
Actually I did the trip backwards, from Matte to photo.
Just to try the fine art papers I have with the photo ink instead the matte I already have.
The one I am the most interested on is the new Epson Hot Press Bright, love it, looks great and deep and rich on matte black, I hope to make it work as well on photo black.

Hi Hugo,

I've printed both MK on photo papers and PK on matt papers on my 9800 and 9900.

The Mk on photo paper is interesting since it gives the appearance of a matt varnish coating over the blacks. It works in a pinch when you don't have the ink to swap or need to run a couple of photo-type papers in the middle of a run. The profiles are a little different when you use the Pk profile with the Mk inks, but it's not too far different and the prints are pretty close.

My ancient Epson 4000 switches between Mk and Pk automatically without a swap-out of carts nor a ink dump. Wish they had continued this set-up in my older printers! Though the Pk and Mk is installed in both my 3880 and 9900, it still takes an ink dump to switch between the two colors, though not too much. It's a lot easier and faster than changing my old 7600 and much, much better than the switch to Pk from Mk on my 9800. That eats lots of ink and requires a special kit to perform!
