Small book binders?
« on: October 13, 2013, 08:10:30 pm »

Can I get a small, nice quality book made out of my own prints that I made like the books that you can get at a lot of photo services today, like WalMart and Shutterfly and Apple? Without breaking the bank, that is.

Depends on how well built the bank is... :-)

There are several online companies that will publish small runs for reasonable prices.  I know a couple people who have used these services (specifically one in China, but at the moment I can't remember the name).  I've talked to them about it, have some mild interest, but have never proceeded beyond a cursory look.  The only one I can think of off hand is lulu.com.  I'm not recommending that specific company, but it will certainly give you an idea of what can be done.

Another option may or may not be equally interesting, which is to literally do both printing and binding yourself.  I don't know that it is possible to do a high quality book binding, but for a few hundred dollars a machine that does a plastic spiral binding might be an option.  Higher priced machines can do larger books and are easier for larger quantities.   If punched holes and plastic spiral, wire loop, or plastic comb bindings are acceptable, and particularly if production runs are very small, this might be an acceptable way to produce suitable books.

Do you want to bind your prints into a book? If so a good book binder such as Don Taylor in downtown Toronto would do a fine job.

I talked with a bookbinder a while back. Custom smythsewn books are about $125 to bind. Other binders may do it cheaper.

I do not know where you live but i live in the netherlands and just had a book binded and made with hardcover, endresult is 40 pages A4 size. The binding cost is about 25 euros, with one line of text on cover.
I used innova ifa05 as paper and printed on epson4900. This paper was folded and sewn etc.
One can also have loose papers binded with a adhesive tape  will give a more lay flat result, but costs a good bit more.

Yes, maybe I wasn't clear on that one.

OK, in that case my advice above holds. Don is very good and his prices are reasonable for the high quality he produces. I don't know whether you are located in the Toronto area; normally one would want to bring the work to the binder, make an appropriate selection of cover and end-paper materials and discuss the type of binding that would be done, the kind of lettering on the spine if any, etc. This is what I do for each of the books I bring to Don. I did write-up this form of photo presentation on this website. You can find it here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/shoe-box.shtml

Thanks. That looks good, although Toronto is too far away (I'm in NY metro). 60 Canadian dollars as a price is very encouraging. There must be somebody in NYC or close who does this.

I would expect to pay a lot more in NYC. To start with, overheads (rent, utilities, etc.) for such studios would be very high there.

NYC metro area has or had numerous book binders most of them make their living rebinding books for library's (especially law library's). When I was employed by the federal court system and the US Attys office in lower manhattan(ca 1975-1977) our library was allegedly infested with insects(turned out that the insects were there. The office had about 15 book binders out for an inspection and to prepare an RFP., at least another 100 complained about being left out. My recollection was that most of the businesses were located in Brooklyn, Queens Long Island city, Jersey city, Patchouge/ Islip etc. Google and the Yellow pages should be your friend here. Currently I live in rural central Pa. and there are at least 3 bookbinders in the Hershey(small town usa) pa area alone.
