tether D800 with USB 3.0 speed ?
« on: October 09, 2013, 12:55:36 pm »

Hi,

I bought a Matrox DS1 thunderbolt dock which offers to use USB 3.0 with my 2011 MBP.

I bought two 5 meters USB cables for ten EUR each on ebay.

But I only get a USB 2.0 connection.

CanĀ“t find the original 5 ft. Nikon cable, but a 5 ft. cable from an external HD enables USB 3.0 speed with the camera. I can check the status of the connection in the System overview of the OS (= 10.8.5).

Nikon support told me between two and three meters was the maximum for USB 3.0. If the connection is not good enough, it will be automatically downgraded to USB 2.0.

So what experiences did you make? Will a tethertools 15 ft. cable work?

Thanks,

Bernd

Am I in the right section of the forum?

I have read 3m is the max distance with USB3.
after that you need a extension cable with a repeater.

I use the d800 on a USB2 port of my computer and get about 25MB/second
that is more than standard USB2..  about a second download per photo- not bad.
I even use it with a 20 m usb active extension cable with the same result.

I use the USB3 cables from nine-volt.com with my D800 which are 15 feet long and always get USB3 speeds.

Hello,

I have used a 5 meter USB 3.0 cable without any problems with my Nikon D800E attached to a Imac.

Cheers
