The harsh light helps to define carvings. The doors look interesting in their own right as well.

In my opinion, neither the brightening nor the cropping is an improvement.

Guess I should had spent more time -- there looked to be something there as I walked by >> just didn't capture it. At least a remembrance of the architecture

I like your latest crop and I am belatedly understanding more what you mean about the light. Nevertheless, it made me what to crop it too.
