Hasselblad X1 vs Imacon 848
« on: September 24, 2013, 12:10:19 pm »

Hi all!

I'm sorry if my topic doesn't match this forum absolutely..

I decided to jump from Epson v700 up to virtual drum scanner.. I don't consider 949/X5 because I need to scan 5x7!
I hesitate between Hasselblad X1 and Imacon 848. I have found the both (apprx. equal prices) but as some people write - X1 is 646 (not 848) and 646 gives more noises in shadows! In generally I take studio portraits and need clear darks and shadows. I don't have reliable information regarding X1 vs 848 (in shadows!).

I will be appreciated for any useful information!

Sincerely,
Vladimir.

I had a 646 and later a 848.  I used to rent time on an X1.  Frankly, noise in the shadows has never been a concern with any of these scanners.  Grain is what you see more than anything else.  The difference I noticed was, in the main, speed.

all these scanners use the same CCD from Kodak and the same optik from Rodenstock.
therefore they all deliver the same quality. when they are well calibrated.
the only difference is the speed and the 8000 dpi possibility at 35 mm at 848/949- that 646 usualy would deliver the same resolution, when the Imacon software would allow it.

Dear Vladimir,
All scanners are great! 646, 848, X1
Keep in mind that very important is condition of the equipment.  Sometimes you can get nice looking scanner ex. X1  in awful condition. (or 646 in perfect condition) Very important are: Gearbox with belts, light tubes.
I can confirm: this is very nice equipment. If you like I have one FT646 for sale  :)

Thank all for kind answers..
Special thanks to RomanN, who told me about Creo scanners! Really I need to scan up to 8x10 but I was sure that it possible using drum scanner only (for real nice quality)..

If you let me I'd like to change my question -
what kind of not drum scanner is the best up to 8x10?

Thank all again!..

Heidelberg Topaz is ok. And you can buy it in great shape for 2000 euro. But shipment will be expensive. 150 kg 1300x900x700mm. But I see that your budget is higher, maybe you need to think about true drum scanner like Tango...

Any thoughts on the older 343? Is the quality the same as its bigger brothers, just smaller film format?
