Unusual addition to star trail shot

A kiwi man made this shot and made the front page of a widely read online newspaper:

I am from NZ but I don't know him. I've not seen someone do this before. Maybe someone else has?

Nice shot. He should get an award just for stamina power to get the shot. I am a street photog. If I spend 5 sec on a shot that is long for me.

hah this one took me about 8 hours in total (start to finish), cold and windy hours...

Wow! That's gorgeous Rob! Was it set up completely automatic, or did you have to tend it occasionally? I always have had a hard time waiting at night. However, I figure for exposures longer than an hour, I can pull out a sleeping bag, tie my camera to my arm with a fishing line (with 6 inches to spare), and go to sleep.  Oh, and set the alarm to be up before sunrise.  ;

Mostly manual. Shot the sunset shifted in portrait then shot the star trails later using a cable release locked on servo.

Sat in some shelter and read a book!
