Coverage with 8 ounces of canvas coating
« on: September 14, 2013, 09:21:38 am »

Would 8 ounces of print varnish be enough to put three coats on a 30x40 canvas? I don`t want to start the process if it will run out before I`m done and I only have 8 ounces left.  I use a Wagner HVLP sprayer.

1/2 oz. per sq. ft. per generous coat on average.
Your print is 8.3 sq. ft. Probably enough for 2 nice coats.

Thanks Dan. Is it best to hang the canvas vertical or an angle for spraying?

Either should work but for me the angle works much better.
I have two large 30 x 40" heavy cardboards taped together to make a upside down V to set on my finishing table in front of the outlet fan.
I just pin the canvas to the cardboard on all 4 corners. The light reflects off the canvas so much better at that angle. Makes it easy to see your wet on wet overlap spray pattern.

well here are some details on what happened. I got an 8 oz bottle of gloss finish coating from finestraart. I shook the bottle for a while then poured the contents in the cup of my hvlp sprayer. It came out with clumps so I had to use a long handled spoon for a long time. Wish I had an old blender so I could get the lumps out! I started to spray my canvas print and it was blowing some large drops here and there. I was able to take a tissue and dab at the big splotches and they eventually dried out and disappeared. It dried ok but the blue sky seems to have some problems with spots. My hvlp spray unit was clogged with chunks and was hard to clean out.  Has anyone tried this product? It is urethane based. It looked good where it went on smoothly but I don`t think I will be trying any more of it.

You should pour All liquids through a paper paint strainer before spraying. You can get 50 to a box fairly cheap.
Absolutely eliminates the problem.
Also stir rather then shake. You want to dissolve those silica clumps into the liquid. It is the product that settles that controls your sheen. Even with a gloss finish you will still have a little to dissolve.
